As generative AI increases in ability, complexity, and scope, AI voice agents have emerged from science fiction to science fact. Marrying the power of large language models with text-to-speech voice models, these tools now allow for near-real-time generation of AI voices based on a carefully concocted prompt and a hyperrealistic clone of someone's voice. Autonomous AI agents can respond in the moment and at scale, conversing with real people and other agents alike while quickly parsing speech, context, and intention.
These AI voice agents promise call center efficiency. Using AI agents to respond to customer queries, call centers can eliminate wait times, provide instant resolutions, and gain happier customers.
Yet as a recent report from Business Insider highlights, that promise has a complicated flip side. A consumer, attempting to simply lower their internet bill, created a "bossy" AI voice agent to sit on hold and negotiate for her. The agent didn't just wait in line; it argued, "hallucinated" better competitor rates, and threatened to cancel service — all while the human representative on the other end had no idea they were speaking to a machine.
The incident described by Business Insider is not an anomaly. It is a signal of a broader shift in how humans and machines interact. While a consumer using an agent to save $15 is a nuisance, the same technology is being weaponized by bad actors to commit fraud at an industrial scale.
