7 Signs Your Organization Needs Deepfake Detection

Most security teams don't evaluate whether they need deepfake detection until an incident makes the topic unavoidable. By that point, an attacker has already reset a credential, passed a background check under a false identity, or cleared a transaction. The gap doesn't announce itself, leaving organizations feeling vulnerable and unprepared.

Sign 1: Your Help Desk Resets Credentials over calls with no authenticity check

Standard credential reset procedures follow a familiar pattern. An employee fails a biometric check or loses access. The help desk escalates to a manager, who confirms the person's identity over the phone before restoring access.

That process was designed as a safeguard. It assumed voice and presence were reliable signals of identity. They are not.

Attackers use cloned voices to impersonate employees, trigger resets, and gain access to systems without touching a single technical control. The help desk interaction looks routine. The confirmation sounds authentic. Every step of the process works exactly as designed. The problem is that the trust model behind it no longer holds.

Any workflow that requires a human to confirm identity before granting or restoring access needs an authenticity signal beneath it. A voice on a call is not that signal.

In September 2023, attackers breached MGM Resorts by calling the IT help desk and impersonating an employee whose details they had pulled from LinkedIn. The help desk was successfully convinced to hand over login credentials. The breach that followed cost MGM approximately $100 million in third-quarter losses and disrupted operations across its Las Vegas properties for nearly a week. The call itself took minutes. Nothing in the workflow flagged it as unusual — because nothing in the workflow was designed to.

Sign 2: You're hiring remotely at scale with no way to verify who's on screen

For a hiring team screening hundreds of candidates a year over video, no control in that workflow determines whether any face or voice on screen is real.

Recruiters assess candidates based on what they see and hear. Eye contact, communication style, and tone of voice all contribute to a hiring decision. There is no control in a standard video interview that determines whether the face or voice on screen is real.

Human perception is not a reliable control for detection. In our deepfake challenge, participants correctly identified real versus manipulated media just over half the time. This can make security professionals feel cautious and aware of their limitations when relying solely on human judgment.

If a hire grants access to internal systems, sensitive data, or financial workflows, the interview is a security event. Gartner projects that one in four job candidates could be fake by 2028. One in three hiring managers reports they have already encountered a fake identity during an interview. The pipeline to reach that scale is already in place.

Sign 3: Your Contact Center Makes Account Decisions Based on Voice Confirmation alone

Voice authentication confirms whether a caller matches a known voiceprint. It does not confirm whether the voice is human. A cloned voice can pass a biometric check because the system validates similarity, not authenticity. These are different evaluations, and answering one does not resolve the other.

In a contact center processing hundreds of calls per hour, a synthetic caller moves through the workflow just as any other caller does. Liveness detection catches replay attacks and static image injection. It identifies whether a face is present and responsive. It does not determine whether that face was generated or manipulated by AI.

Generative models produce faces that move, blink, and respond to prompts. The presence of motion and interaction does not guarantee authenticity. A synthetic face can pass a liveness check while still being entirely fabricated.

MITRE ATLAS documented this gap directly. Using widely available face-swap tools and virtual camera software, researchers were able to inject AI-generated imagery into a mobile onboarding flow, bypass liveness detection, and complete identity verification under a false identity, using a non-rooted Android device and open-source software. The attack required no specialized access. The liveness check passed.

If your onboarding workflow treats liveness as the final authenticity control, the gap is structural. Recognizing this can empower organizations to implement more robust, proactive detection solutions rather than relying on assumptions that something is real.

Document verification faces a parallel problem. AI tools can generate identity documents that pass standard format checks. Detection at the document layer, not just the biometric layer, is the missing control.

Sign 5: High-stakes Approvals Happen Over Video or Voice With No Verification Step

Calls that authorize wire transfers, approve acquisitions, or direct sensitive operations are among the highest-value targets for voice and video impersonation. The potential payout justifies the effort. In many cases, the effort is minimal.

IBM X-Force researchers produced realistic deepfakes for as little as $5 in cloud computing costs in under an hour. The cost barrier that once limited these attacks to well-resourced actors no longer exists. Attacks that once required significant technical investment can now be executed with widely available tools.

If your organization's highest-stakes decisions rely on a participant's face or voice as the trust signal, and nothing in the workflow independently verifies that signal, the exposure is direct. The authorization happens before any security control has the opportunity to act.

In early 2024, a finance employee at engineering firm Arup joined a video call with people who looked and sounded like the company's CFO and several colleagues. Every participant on the call was a deepfake recreation. The employee transferred $25.6 million across 15 transactions before discovering the fraud after following up with the company's UK headquarters. No system in the workflow asked whether the faces on the call were real.

Sign 6: Your Security Stack Has No Signal for Manipulated Media

Logs, behavioral analysis, endpoint monitoring, and network traffic detection all build a picture of activity over time. They are effective at identifying patterns, anomalies, and lateral movement. A deepfake attack does not produce those patterns.

The attack completes in a single interaction. A credential reset, a hiring interview, or a contact center call each lasts minutes. By the time behavioral monitoring has enough data to flag anything, the interaction is over, and access has been granted.

If your SIEM receives no input from a media authenticity layer, deepfake incidents are invisible to your security operations center until after the outcome. The kill chain in a deepfake attack is compressed to a single conversation. Detection has to operate at the same speed.

Sign 7: You Have No Defined Response Process for a Deepfake Incident

If a hiring manager suspects a candidate was synthetic, what happens next? If a contact center agent flags a call as suspicious after the fact, who reviews it, what evidence exists, and how does the team contain access?

The absence of a documented response process is itself a sign that the security program has not integrated detection. A detection workflow without a response is incomplete. It surfaces a signal with nowhere to go.

An effective response process defines what triggers escalation, who receives notification, what evidence the team preserves, and which access controls apply at each risk tier. Without those thresholds, a detection event produces uncertainty rather than action.

Every workflow is missing the same control

Each of these signs points to the same structural gap. Identity verification confirms who someone claims to be. Deepfake detection confirms whether the media itself is real. Existing security tools were built to answer the first question. None of them asks the second.

Deepfake detection does not replace the controls already in place. It answers the question that those controls were never built to ask.
