Notable Deepfake Incidents Reshaping Business Risk

Most people will encounter a deepfake at some point. It may appear as a manipulated celebrity image online or as something far more serious and fraudulent. While not every instance results in direct harm, synthetic media introduces risk when it intersects with trust, identity, and decision-making, contexts where misuse and abuse can scale quickly.

In the business world, deepfakes now affect hiring, finance, communications, and public platforms. What began as isolated experiments has become a repeatable, low-cost attack method with real operational and regulatory impact. As Gartner Vice President Analyst Akif Khan has observed, attacks using generative AI for phishing, deepfakes, and social engineering have moved into the mainstream.

The incidents below show how deepfakes are already causing measurable harm, how quickly they scale, and why organizations must treat synthetic media as an operational reality. They represent only a small fraction of reported cases, as many deepfake-driven incidents, — particularly contact center fraud and executive impersonation — are never publicly disclosed.

Financial Fraud and Executive Impersonation

Deepfakes are increasingly used to authorize payments, manipulate approvals, and bypass traditional financial safeguards. Deepfakes bypass financial controls by exploiting trust in executive communications, not weaknesses in technical systems.

Deepfake Impersonation Leads to $25 Million Loss in Hong Kong

In 2024, attackers used manipulated video and audio to impersonate a multinational company’s chief financial officer during a live video call in Hong Kong. The employee on the call authorized transfers totaling HK$200 million, or about $25.6 million. The attack exploited trust in executive communications rather than technical systems, showing how deepfakes can bypass financial controls by targeting human verification processes. Deepfake fraud in Asia-Pacific has risen by up to 2,100 percent, reflecting increasingly industrialized attack methods.

A Deepfake-Enabled Exploit at UXLINK

UXLINK suffered a multimillion-dollar loss after an attacker used a manipulated video to impersonate a trusted business partner during live calls. Rather than exploiting code, the attacker gained trust, accessed an employee’s device and accounts, and took control of a critical smart contract, minting billions of tokens and draining treasury funds. Forensic analysis confirmed an external deepfake-enabled attack, highlighting how deepfakes increasingly target the human layer.

Government and Public Authority Impersonation

Public officials are increasingly targeted because their identities carry immediate authority and trust. If public officials can be convincingly impersonated, the same techniques can be applied to corporate leadership and critical decision-makers.

AI-Generated Voice Messages Impersonate Marco Rubio

An impersonator posing as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio contacted government officials using AI-generated voice messages and AI-written texts. Digital forensics expert Hany Farid noted that only 15 to 20 seconds of real audio can be enough to convincingly clone a voice. 

Deepfake Videos Impersonating UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer

Between May and December 2025, thousands of manipulated videos circulated online falsely portraying UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing government actions such as a national curfew and expanded surveillance. One video reached more than 430,000 views, and investigators identified over 6,000 similar posts from accounts posing as news outlets. The activity appeared driven by monetized engagement rather than political coordination, showing how deepfakes can erode public trust through attention economics.

Hiring Fraud and Insider Risk

Recruitment workflows are becoming a new attack surface as identity verification moves online. Deepfakes and AI-generated materials can undermine hiring, identity, and access controls — introducing insider risk before onboarding begins. In a survey of nearly 900 hiring professionals, 72 percent reported encountering AI-generated résumés, alongside fabricated work samples, fake references, and real-time face swapping during interviews.

State-Backed AI Impersonation in Hiring Pipelines

Since 2022, North Korean state-backed groups have been running a large, organized scheme built on fake identities.

Cyber personnel pose as recruiters, send developers “technical tests” that secretly contain malware, and place operatives inside Western companies as remote workers using AI-generated headshots and altered ID documents. One eight-person group earned $1.64 million over 3.5 years. In another case, a single pipeline produced 135 fake personas and targeted more than 73,000 people.

Synthetic media is not incidental to these operations, it enables them. AI-generated faces, manipulated identification documents, and fabricated professional histories allow threat actors to move through trust-based hiring workflows with reduced friction.

North Korean Operative Infiltrates a U.S. Company’s Hiring Process

In 2024, security awareness firm KnowBe4 disclosed that a remote IT worker it had recently hired was in fact a fabricated persona operated by a North Korean threat actor. The individual passed background checks, reference verification, and multiple live video interviews using a stolen U.S. identity and manipulated visual materials, and was only discovered after post-hire monitoring flagged suspicious activity. By this point, corporate equipment and credentials had already been issued.

Synthetic Identity Schemes Target U.S. Hiring Workflows

Between 2020 and 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice uncovered a coordinated employment fraud scheme in which overseas IT workers used stolen U.S. identities to secure remote roles at American companies. The scheme affected more than 300 U.S. companies, including multiple Fortune 500 firms across media, technology, aerospace, manufacturing, and retail. The operation relied on falsified documentation and U.S.-based “laptop farms” to appear domestically located throughout hiring and employment.

While the case did not hinge on deepfake media alone, it highlights how synthetic identities, remote hiring workflows, and trust-based verification can combine to introduce insider risk at scale — often without detection until law enforcement intervenes.

Manipulation of Evidence and Law Enforcement Records

Deepfakes are now appearing in criminal investigations and evidentiary materials. Deepfakes can compromise evidentiary integrity, forcing law enforcement to treat synthetic media as a criminal matter, not just misinformation.

Police Charge Filed Over Deepfake Police Body Camera Footage in the US

In a 2025 case in New Hampshire, prosecutors charged a man with using deepfake techniques to alter a police officer’s body camera video. Investigators allege the manipulated footage misrepresented events captured during a law enforcement encounter.

Platform Abuse and Reputation Risk

Deepfakes increasingly exploit social and streaming platforms to spread false content at scale. Deepfakes can hijack attention and credibility at scale, creating reputational and financial risk even without direct fraud.

A Fake NVIDIA Livestream Outperformed the Real One

During NVIDIA’s GTC keynote, YouTube surfaced an AI-generated deepfake livestream impersonating CEO Jensen Huang promoting a cryptocurrency scam. At its peak, the fake stream attracted 95,000 viewers, whereas the official NVIDIA broadcast reached approximately 12,000 viewers. 

Sexualized AI Deepfakes Generated by Grok Flood X

In early 2026, users exploited image-generation features in Grok, the AI model developed by xAI, to create and circulate sexualized images of real people on X. The content depicted non-consensual, sexually explicit scenarios. California Attorney General Rob Bonta launched an investigation, citing an “avalanche” of reports involving non-consensual sexual imagery. Following regulatory and civil society pressure, xAI restricted Grok’s ability to generate or edit images of real individuals in jurisdictions where the content is illegal. The incident shows how quickly generative systems can be repurposed for abuse and how safeguards can lag behind misuse.

How Deepfake Incidents Impact Businesses

Across sectors and regions, these incidents share common traits. They have low barriers to entry, scale quickly through legitimate platforms, and exploit trust rather than technical flaws. Deepfakes are no longer only a content moderation issue. They now affect compliance, operations, hiring, financial controls, and executive communications.

Regulators are responding with new disclosure, takedown, and liability frameworks. Enforcement timelines are accelerating. At the same time, attackers and opportunists continue to adapt faster than policy.
